The Languedoc region in Southern France has an amazing history and is home to more historical sites to explore than any other region of France outside of Paris. Within the Languedoc, there are 6 UNESCO World heritage sites, as well as numerous other tourist sites covering Palaeolithic cave paintings, Roman monuments, Cathar ruins, medieval hilltop villages and remnants from the early industrial age.
Carcassonne is located in the heart of Southern France, 1 hour from the Mediterranean coast. Carcassonne airport provides cheap flights to Languedoc and the South of France, mainly through Ryanair (from UK, Ireland & Belgium). The 2026 schedule of flights to Carcassonne airport continues the upward trend of passenger numbers to this busy French airport.
The capital of the Gard department, France, is the city of Nimes, which was an important Roman settlement built by soldiers under the Emperor Augustus. In the centre of Nimes, you can still see remnants of the Roman times, including the Maison Carrée (one of the best-preserved roman temples outside of Italy) and Les Arenes roman amphitheatre. But perhaps the most important Roman artefact, is the magnificent Pont du Gard aqueduct, that brought water from Uzes to Nimes.
The Languedoc is the perfect French holiday destination. Here are our 10 favourite places to visit in Languedoc, including Carcassonne's wonderful castle, the Canal du Midi, beautiful Pezenas, artistic Collioure, ancient Nimes, the maginificent Pont du Gard and metropolitan Montpellier. What more could you want from a tour of the South of France?
Cassis is one of my favourite places in the South of France. This lovely coastal town on the French Riviera is blessed with some of the most dramatic beaches in France. The stretch of Southern France coastline between Marseille and Cassis has quite a few dull beaches, but the beautiful fjord-like inlet near Cassis, called Calanques de Port Miou, offers the most amazing beach in the South of France.
